Gonzaga - Davidson Preview

They finished tops in the WCC again but this time the Gonzaga Bulldogs (13- 1 WCC, 25- 7 overall) did not win the conference tournament as they were upended by the San Diego Toreros 69- 62. The Zags are a relatively young team that’s still developing.

Point Guard Jeremy Pargo (11.9 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 6.0 APG) spreads the ball around nicely, finding the open man. He can also create opportunities for himself. Guard Matt Bouldin (12.7 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.9 APG) leads the team in points. Together, he and Pargo average 2.8 SPG. Freshman forward Austin Daye (10.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 1.7 BPG) has come along quickly. He’s accurate in the paint and the Bulldogs’ best free throw shooter at 89%. Junior forward Josh Heytvelt (10.2 PPG, 4.8 RPG) offers solid support in front. David Pendergraft (8.8 PPG, .440 3-PT%, 4.4 RPG) is a huge help in the backcourt.

The Davidson Wildcats (20- 0 Southern, 26- 6 overall) dominated their conference this season. Led by sharp shooting guard Stephen Curry (25.1 PPG, 4.8 RPG), Davidson has become a formidable opponent. Curry hit 44% from downtown, 90% from the free and 49% from the field. He averaged 1.9 SPG. He’s a dynamic force whenever he’s on the court. Guard Jason Richards (12.6 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 8.0 APG), who led the nation in assists, is the sure-handed set up man. He also possesses some fine defensive skills. Senior forward Boris Meno (7.8 PPG, 5.8 RPG) is an accurate shooter, hitting 50% of his attempts.

Gonzaga has to beware of Davidson. The Wildcats are a well-run team with a refined backcourt and a tough frontcourt. The Zags have played uneven at times and need to be thoroughly focused for this matchup.
