The sixth ranked Wisconsin Badgers (29- 5, 13- 3 Big Ten) finished two games behind top-ranked Ohio State and also lost to State in the tournament 66- 49. They enter the NCAA tourney having lost 3 of their last ten contests. The Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders (26- 6, 14- 2 Southland West) won the West division of their conference and then took the Southland tournament 81- 78 against Northwestern State.
With junior swingman Brian Butch (8.8 PPG, 5.9 RPG) injured the Badgers are not as good as they were with him in the lineup. Still, senior forward Alando Tucker (19.9 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.0 APG) is a major impact player. But don’t expect this team to succeed on Tucker’s shoulders alone. Point guard Michael Flowers (7.2 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.0 APG) will have to play sure-handed ball and senior guard Kammron Taylor (12.6 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 1.9 APG) must be on target.
It was just a few years ago that TAM at CP entered the realm of NCAA basketball and now they’re in the tournament. This is a team that should be happy to just get into March Madness. Overall, the Islanders are a well-balanced club. Seven-foot senior center Chris Daniels (15 PPG, 6.6 RPG) certainly gives this team a presence upfront. Senior point guard Josh Ervin (8.2 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 3.7 RPG) manages the offense nicely.
It will be difficult for the Islanders to beat the Badgers. They just don’t have the big guns. Then again, upsets are all a part of the “madness” of this March classic.
