Line From Bookmaker: UCLA -19.5
The #3 UCLA Bruins (26- 5, 15- 3 Pac-10) were the top team in their conference, winning the regular season but bowing out early in the Pac-10 tournament. Webber State (20- 11, 11- 5 Big Sky) took both the regular season crown and the Big Sky Tournament.
The Bruins have a great defense, which is able to shut down even the toughest competitors. Junior guard Arron Afflalo (16.7 PPG, 2.4 RPG) is the team’s biggest point producer, while Darren Collison (12.6 PPG, 6.0 APG) hits 45% from the three-point line. There’s scoring from all over the court with sophomore forwards Josh Shipp (13.5 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 2.5 APG) and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (8.7 PPG, 7.7 RPG) providing muscle upfront.
To win, Webber State has to play tenacious defense, which will be tough against UCLA, if not impossible. Senior forward David Patten (14.4 PPG. 5.5 RPG), Big Sky Player of the Year, leads the team upfront, while sophomore guard Juan Pablo Silveira (11.2 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 3.3 APG) runs the backcourt. Junior forward Arturas Valeika (8.1 PPG, 6.6 RPG) is the club’s best rebound man. Webber’s team field goal percentage of 49.1 is 12th-best in the country.
Webber State will have its hand full with the UCLA Bruins. This year UCLA handled #13 Washington State, #24 Arizona, #21 USC, #9 Oregon, #6 Texas A&M and many others. They beat each of them easily. If Webber can slow the game down, they may have a chance.
