The #17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (24- 7, 11- 5 Big East), who finished fourth in the powerhouse Big East, lost to Georgetown in the conference semi-final match by a score of 84- 82. The #22 Winthrop Eagles (28- 4, 14- 0 Big South) were Big South champs this year, dominating that league. They’ve won 18 consecutive games.
Can the Fighting Irish make it past St. Patrick’s Day and into the second week of the tournament? Senior guards Russell Carter (17.2 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 1.9 APG) and Colin Falls (15.4 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 2.4 APG) are the point producers on the team, with both hitting 41% of their threes; if these guys are off so too is the team. Carter is also solid on “D.” Freshman forward Luke Harangody (11.5 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.2 APG) along with junior forward Rob Kurz (12.6 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.8 APG) are in charge of the boards. Kurz also has a good 3-point shot.
Are these guys the George Mason of 2007? For Winthrop to contend, their outside game must be on, loosening up the inside for swingman Craig Bradshaw (13.3 PPG, 6.3 RPG) to maneuver. Junior guard Michael Jenkins (15.3 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 3.0 APG), a 43% three-point shooter, can help a lot if he’s on. Senior guard Torrell Martin (14.2 PPG, 5.2 RPG) will also be an important factor. The team is solid on both ends of the court.
Winthrop is a good team with rebounding, shooting and defense. The Eagles offer a more balanced attack. The Irish have some standouts at guard who must be on for them to win.
