The fifth ranked Memphis Tigers (30- 3, 16- 0 C-USA) not only took the regular season title but also the Conference USA tournament title. The North Texas Mean Green (23- 10, 10- 8 S. Belt West) finished third in their division but won their post-season tournament.
Memphis has a fine defense that can stop opponents. Sophomore guard Chris Douglas-Roberts (15.4 PPG, 3.8 RPG) leads the team in scoring, while sophomore forward Robert Dozier (9.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG) offers balance between scoring and the boards. Senior guard Jeremy Hunt (13.6 PPG, 2.8 RPG) hits from downtown 38% of the time. Junior freshman, Joey Dorsey (8.7 PPG, 9.6 RPG) is the best at rebounding.
North Texas needs their two front men—juniors Quincy Williams (10.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 1.5 APG) and Keith Wooden (9.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.5 APG)—to stay out of foul trouble and keep their team in the game. Both are fine rebounders and offer good ball movement and shot options. Three guards are responsible for most of the Mean Green’s points. Senior Calvin Watson (15.8 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 1.3 APG) can hit threes at a 40% clip. Senior Kendrick Davis (13.2 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 1.6 APG) and junior Michael Sturns (12.4 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 1.6 APG) are the other two point makers.
Look for the Memphis defense to control this game and to stymie the North Texas offense. The match-up underneath is a good one but Memphis has a better bench to back up their forwards.
