Line From Bookmaker: Louisville -5.5
The 16th ranked Louisville Cardinals (23- 9, 12- 4 Big East) finished tied for second in their league, while beating nationally ranked #5 Pittsburgh and #13 Marquette. During the season the unranked Stanford Cardinals (18- 12, 8- 8 Pac-10) managed to beat #2 UCLA, #17 Oregon, #23 Washington State and #24 Washington.
Rick Pitino’s Louisville team comes into the Big Dance as the hottest Big East club in the tournament and they would like to keep it that way. Louisville’s top scorers are sophomore forward Terrence Williams (12.7 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 3.9 APG) and guard Edgar Sosa (10.7 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 2.7 APG). It seems like everyone gets in the act as forward/center David Padgett, forward Juan Palacios and guard Jerry Smith average 5.7, 5.7 and 3.7 rebounds per game and 9.6, 9.4 and 8.0 point per game respectively.
The Stanford Cardinals are a young team that includes two freshmen and two sophomore starters. Forward Lawrence Hill (15.9 PPG, 6.0 APG) and guard Anthony Goods (13.3 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 2.4 APG) are the leading scorers. Off the bench, Mitch Johnson (4.5 PPG, 3.4 APG) sets up plays well. Frosh forward Brook Lopez and freshman center Robin Lopez can both score and have 6.0 and 5.6 RPG respectively.
The Cardinals of Louisville have to be careful because the Cardinals of Stanford have proven that on any given night they can beat any club. Louisville must stay away from the impetuous three-pointers they often take. Stanford must be effective with their outside shooting to open up the inside.
