The Indiana Hoosiers (20- 10, 10- 6 Big Ten) finished third in a conference that featured two of the top teams in the nation—Ohio State and Wisconsin. The Hoosiers beat #24 Michigan State and #2 Wisconsin during the regular season. The Gonzaga Bulldogs (23- 10, 11- 3 WCC) were the top team in their division and able to beat #2 UNC, #25 Texas, and #8 Washington.
Indiana junior forward D.J. White (13.7 PPG, 7.0 RPG) is a good inside player, while guards Roderick Wilmont (12.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG), A.J. Ratliff (9.8 PPG, 2.3 RPG) and Armon Bassett (9.7 PPG, 2.4 RPG) are all 40% shooters from the three-point line. Together these guys average 8 three-point baskets per game. Coach Kelvin Sampson knows how to win and will need to use all of his knowledge to do so this weekend.
This is the Bulldogs ninth straight trip to the Big Dance. Many thought that they’d have a tough time getting there this season, but the Zags managed to win the WCC in the regular season and the conference tournament also. The team focuses on perimeter shooting and so if they go cold, the Bulldogs will be in trouble. Guard-forward Scott Dougherty (9.9 PPG, 3.2 RPG) and guard Danny Pariseau (9.7 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 4.7 APG) both hit 3-pointers with about 40% accuracy. Inside, 6-foot, 11-inch senior forward Sean Denison has 10.8 PPG and 6.3 RPG, while 6-foot, 10-inch sophomore center John Bryant is good for 10.4 PPG and 6.7 RPG.
This is a tough game to call. Hitting from the outside and controlling the boards will be key for both teams.
