2006 New York Knicks Basketball Season Preview
Expert coach Larry Brown, a true winner, couldn’t turn the Knickerbockers around last season. With the firing of Brown, Isiah Thomas, team president, will be performing bench duty this season. There’s been little done to change this team during the off-season. New York has been on a downward spiral since 2004 when it last made the playoffs, winning fewer games each season.
If point guard Stephon Marbury (16.3 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 6.4 APG, 45.1 FG%, 75.5 FT%) and shooting guard Steve Francis (14.4 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.9 APG, 43.5 FG%, 78.7 FT%) can figure out how to work together, the Knicks will have made a major stride in the right direction. But both of these guys are really run-and-gunners, which leaves no one to see the court and to be the playmaker. As backup point guard, Nate Robinson (9.3 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 2.0 APG, 40.7 FG%, 75.2 FT%) enters his second year; he looks like the real thing.
Channing Fry (12.3 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 0.8 APG, 47.7 FG%, 82.5 FT%) revealed a lot of potential in his rookie year. If he can continue to advance his skills and get tougher, Fry could be a key player. Swingman Jared Jeffries (6.4 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 1.9 APG, 45.1 FG%, 58.9 FT%) looks like he can develop into a top defender.
Center Eddy Curry (13.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 0.3 APG, 56.3 FG%, 63.2 FT%), another young player, has shown solid play. He’s a turn-and-pop guy who needs to find more ways to score. It’s hoped Curry will be better conditioned this season and pull down more rebbies.
With Thomas look for more shooting and less defense, which may or may not be good. Thomas will not call his players out as Brown did. But will kindness create results?
Twenty-three wins last year from the NBA’s biggest payroll—that’s all that owner Jim Dolan got. Thomas has been given one year to improve this team. The question is—can they get any worse? They have to show some improvement. Don’t they? There are no playoffs in this team’s near future.
