Coach: Todd Graham (2nd year at Tulsa)
Team Name: Golden Hurricanes
2007 Overall Record: 10-4
Returning Starters: 14

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane (10-4, 6-2) tied for first in the C-USA West Division. They lost the conference title to Central Florida University 25-44. In the post-season, the Hurricane went to the GMAC Bowl where they humiliated Bowling Green 63-7. This season once again, Tulsa looks to be a solid contender for the Western Division crown.

Senior David Johnson will replace record-breaking quarterback Paul Smith. It’s expected that although he may not pass for outlandish numbers of yards, he will do fine, especially because there are so many skilled players around him. The running squad is impressive. Last season, senior RB Tarrion Adams ran for 1,225 yards and eight touchdowns and Jamal Williams gained 458 yards. Full back Charles Clay, who caught 69 passes for 1,024 yards and seven scores, rushed for 304 yards. As a freshman, wideout Trae Johnson (70 REC, 1,088 YDS, 13 TDs) led the team in catches. The line is well seasoned.

In 2007, the defense was ranked 108th in total yards and 100th in points allowed. They were 108th versus the pass and 90th against the rush. The good news is that there’s talent back on the frontline, but they’ll need to step-up and play better. There’s not much more good news on “D.” Some of the best linebackers from last season have graduated. This unit is suspect. The secondary is also a concern.

Tulsa plays two swing games in a row. They are late in the season, allowing plenty of time for the team to gel. Both are away with the Golden Hurricane traveling to Arkansas on November 1 and to Houston on November 15. If they can win both of those, this team could end the regular season undefeated.

Tulsa looks to have a lights out offense but a questionable defense. They will definitely put points on the board, and they will have to because opponents will put points up against them. For coach Todd Smith (10-4 in one year), it was a fine first season as the Golden Hurricane tied the school record for most wins in a season with 10. The question for this season is has Smith done enough to bolster the defense?
