Coach: Mack Brown (11th year at Texas)
Team Name: Longhorns
2007 Overall Record: 10-3
Returning Starters: 11
The Texas Longhorns (10-3 overall, 5-3 Big 12) placed second in the Big 12 South in 2007. Their season included a 21-28 loss to Oklahoma, which was the top team in the conference. The Longhorns earned a Holiday Bowl berth where they beat Arizona State easily by a score of 52-34.
When you think of the Texas offense these days, you think of one name—Colt McCoy (424 ATT, 276 COMP, 3,303 YDS, 22 TDs, 18 INT). To say that he is the “Real McCoy” would be both a weak joke and the truth. McCoy is an excellent option QB. Along with impressive passing stats, he also rushed for 492 yards and four touchdowns. Still, he had problems with picks in 2007. That may improve with a more seasoned offense line. Last year it was full of holes. The club faces a major question at running back as the formidable Jamaal Charles, who rushed for 18 touchdowns and 1,619 yards, is gone. Also missing will be wideout Limas Sweed and tight end Jermichael Finley. Sweed was excellent at stretching the field.
Texas hired a new defensive coordinator after the team gave up an average of 277.8 passing yards per game in 2007. Will Muschamp’s job is to improve what last year was the 109th ranked pass “D” in college football. The front seven return with lots of experience and hopefully they can use it. The safety positions are unsure but the corners are sound with gamers Deon Beasley and Ryan Palmer back. The linebacking unit looks to have a big year.
There are a bunch of swing games on the Longhorns’ schedule including three straight—one on the road versus Colorado (October 4) and two at home against Oklahoma (October 11) and Missouri (October 18). Two away games in November at Texas Tech on the first and at Kansas on the 15th are also tough to call.
Head coach Mack Brown has posted a 100-25 record in his first decade at Texas. And although Longhorns almost always seems to be bowl bound, they’ve only captured one Big 12 Championship in the past five years. This season expect another bowl bid and, once again, no conference title. This is a fine nationally ranked team but they are no Oklahoma.
