Coach: Gary Patterson (8th year at TCU)
Team Name: Horned Frogs
2007 Overall Record: 8-5
Returning Starters: 15

For the TCU Horned Frogs (8-5 overall, 4-4 MWC), the 2007 season included a 20-17 overtime loss to the Air Force and three other loses by seven, five and three points. After posting a wining mark, the Horned Frogs played Houston in the Texas Bowl. They beat them 20-13.

In his freshman season, QB Andy Dalton (371 ATT, 222 COMP, 2,459 YDS, 10 TDs, 11 INT) threw for the second-most single season yards in school history. As the season went on, his accuracy improved. Junior backup QB Marcus Jackson is also solid. Wideouts Walter Bryant, a senior, and Jimmy Young, a sophomore, are considered to be the go-to guys this season. Senior RB Aaron Brown is one of the most talented and athletic players in the conference, but he has durability problems. A reliable back up is needed. The offensive line is hearty and tough.

On defense, the line and secondary have both lost premium players. But there’s a lot of talent and depth on the D-line and the young safeties may be some the best the Horned Frogs have ever fielded. Senior nosetackle James Vess, who was suspended last season, is back. Opponents will have to double-team Vess to stop him. Middle linebacker Jason Phillips (87 tackles, 58 solo), now a senior, is one of the most talented players in the league.

Two losses, one versus Oklahoma and the other against BYU are predicted. Beating either, especially BYU, would be huge. On November 6, the team travels to Utah for a swing game.

In 2004, Gary Patterson’s (62-25 in seven years) team hit a bump in the road, securing just five victories and missing a bowl invite. And although the team’s win total in 2007 did not rival their 11 victories in 2006, it was good enough to get them to the post-season. Patterson has a strong group of recruits on hand and sound units on both sides of the ball. This club will give BYU a run for its money when it comes to the conference title.
