Coach: Mark Richt (8th year at Georgia)
Team Name: Bulldogs
2007 Overall Record: 11-2
Returning Starters: 17
Last season, the Georgia Bulldogs (11-2, overall; 6-2 SEC East) finished tied for first in the SEC East, earning a trip to the Sugar Bowl where they beat high-flying Hawaii 41-10. The team returns seven starters on offense and nine on defense and that means that the Bulldogs look loaded for Bear.
In his first two seasons, junior Matthew Stafford (348 ATT, 194 CMP, 2,543 YDS, 19 TDS, 10 INT) has been a good but not an overwhelming performer. With a lot of attention to fundamentals, this talented signal caller could have a breakout season in 2008. Senior WR Mohamed Massaquoi caught 32 balls last season for 14 touchdowns and 491 yards, averaging 15.3 YPC. He’ll be joined at WR by talented junior Kris Durham while versatile senior TE Tripp Chandler rounds out the starting catching unit. Running back Knowshon Moreno (248 CAR, 1,334 YDS, 14 TDS) averaged 5.4 YPC last season. What will he do for an encore as he enters his sophomore season?
Last season, the defense allowed just 20.2 PPG, ranking eighteenth nationally in that category. LB Dannell Ellerbe returns as the club’s leading tackler, with 63 solo and 93 overall, while DT Geno Atkins is back as the leading sack man with 7.5. The defensive line returns all but one player. Although the secondary had its problems last season, giving up 213.3 YPG, it was still competitive. Three of four starters return, including CB Asher Allen, who grabbed three interceptions. Look for the defense to be fast, smart and physical.
Swing games include Arizona State on September 20, LSU on October 25 and Auburn on November 15. All three are on the road. Tennessee visits on October 11 and Florida on November 1. These two contests could determine the success or failure of the Dawgs’ season.
In seven years at the Georgia helm, coach Mark Richt is 72-18. Maybe his biggest worry will be at kicker where freshman Blair Walsh will try to replace the prolific Brandon Coutu. But the offense has legs and arms and the defense, which overall was ranked fourteenth in the nation, is sound upfront, in the middle and deep. Who’s number one? Maybe this year it will be Georgia.
