Coach: Bronco Mendehall (4th year at BYU)
Team Name: Cougars
2007 Overall Record: 11-2
Returning Starters: 12

In 2007, the BYU Cougars (11-2 overall, 8-0 MWC) won their conference and headed to the Las Vegas Bowl where they played UCLA. The Cougars beat the Bruins in a close one 17-16.

BYU welcomes back eight starters on offense. QB Max Hall (496 ATT, 298 COMP, 3,848 YDS, 26 TDs, 12 INT) was outstanding in 2007, as the Arizona State transfer played in his first-ever college season. Hall, a junior, stands to do even better in 2008. The receiving unit includes tight end Dennis Pitts (59 REC, 813 YDS, 5 TDS) and WR Austin Collie, both of whom were Hall’s favored catch men. The running game is anchored by last year’s freshman standout Harvey Unga (244 CAR, 1,227 YDS, 13 TDS). The offensive line welcomes back four starters and should be solid.

While the Cougar offense put an average of 30.1 PPG on the scoreboard, their defense held opponents to 18.5 PPG (9th in the nation). Standout DE Jan Jorgensen (77 tackles, 40 solo, 14 sacks), now a junior, should put in another great season. Senior David Nixon will lead the linebacking corps. But the rest of the unit is fairly inexperienced. Although no starter returns to the corner or safety spots, secondary coach Jamie Hill knows how to build a solid squad.

A 12-0 season is not out of the question for the BYU Cougars. Swing games include a September 13 match-up versus UCLA. In the 2007 regular season, the Bruins beat BYU 27-17. Of course, the Cougars took it to UCLA in their post-season contest. This will be an interesting game. Another contest that can go either way will be on November 22 when the team visits Utah.

The Cougars, who look to be the best in the MWC, should be bowl bound again. Coach Bronco Mendennhall (28-10 in three years) continues to push his team to improve at every practice. With a favorable schedule and fine players on both sides of the ball, this could be the season that BYU gets an invite to a BCS Bowl.
