Coach: Bill Cubit (3rd year at Western Michigan)
Team Name: Broncos
2006 Overall Record: 8-5
Returning Starters: 16

The Western Michigan Broncos (8- 5 overall, 6- 2 MAC) finished second in the MAC West. In 2006, they went to their first bowl game since 1988 and their third ever. Western Michigan lost to Cincinnati in the International Bowl 24- 27, making them 0- 3.

Sixth-year QB Ryan Cubit is gone and there's concern about the signal calling spot. Senior Thomas Peregrin (189 YDs, 3 TDs, 0 INTs) will most likely start, although sophomore Tim Hiller and redshirt freshman Drew Burdi are also possible choices. Mark Bonds (252 CAR, 1,082 YDs, 7 TDs) returns as the leading rusher, while junior WR Jamarko Simmons (61 REC, 688 YDs, 2 TDs) is the best pass catcher. Bonds runs well through and around players and possesses breakaway power and speed. The receiving corps is deep but no one is spectacular. The frontline is tough, experienced and reliable.

The defense held teams to 19.9 PPG. The Broncos were effective versus the run, garnering a national ranking of 6th. Junior MLB Dustin Duclo, the team's defensive MVP, is back. He's a smart and fast player. Although ranked 57th overall in defending the pass, the secondary grabbed 24 INTs in 2006. That was best in the nation. All four starters return, including All- American junior CB Londen Fryar (5 INTs). DE Zach Davidson is tough upfront and returns having compiled 8 sacks last season. New defensive coordinator Bill Miller needs to create a stronger pass rush to hurry QBs more often.

If Western can't find a worthy QB, they will be hard-pressed to be competitive. Swing contests include those at Indiana, Toledo and Central Michigan. West Virginia, Missouri and Iowa will all be tough to beat. However, the strong Bronco "D" has the potential to pull off an upset.
