Coach: Tom Amstutz (7th year at Toledo)
Team Name: Rockets
2006 Overall Record: 5-7
Returning Starters: 16

Last year, the Toledo Rockets (5- 7 overall, 3- 5 MAC) finished 5th in the West and for the first time since 2000 missed a bowl bid. One major problem was at QB, where the Rockets dealt with injuries and inexperience. This proved to be disastrous to the team's spread offense. The other dilemma was in the defensive unit.

Sophomore Aaron Opelt (54.3% COMP, 875 YDs, 6 TDs, 5 INTs) had to adapt quickly last year and garnered a whole lot of pressure packed experience. Senior RB Jalen Parmele (207 CAR, 1,131 YDs, 5.5 AVG, 8 TDs) is a big, tough runner. He'll keep defenses honest, setting up the pass. The team's go-to receiver, Steve Odom, is gone; someone will need to step-up but who? Junior WR Nick Moore seems to have the speed, size and talent to be that guy. Two-time All-MAC senior LT John Greco returns to stabilize a line that has lost three starters, including the center.

The Rockets' defense was a major problem in 2006 as they gave up 27.7 PPG, ranking them 95th nationally. Sophomore SS Barry Church (4 INTs, 71 tackles, 40 solo) was All-MAC in his freshman year. He should be a huge asset with a full season behind him. The linebackers are big and play physically tough. The front four start three new guys. They will have to become a cohesive unit quickly.

This season can go either way for the Rockets. Swing contests include Iowa State, Western Michigan and Ball State. They start their season playing three tough opponents in a row—Purdue, Central Michigan and Kansas. Toledo could certainly be bowl bound once again, but they will have to field a much better passing attack and a sounder defense. Winning one of those first three games along with the swings won't hurt either.

Look for either Boise State or Hawaii having the best shot at playing in a BCS bowl game this January.
