Coach: Paul Johnson (6th year at Navy)
Team Name: Midshipmen
2006 Overall Record: 9-4
Returning Starters: 10

The Midshipmen of Navy (9- 4) are an Independent that has managed to come back to prominence over the past four years as they've been to four bowl games in a row. Last year in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, Navy lost to Boston College 24- 25. Coach Paul Johnson has led Navy to four straight bowl games with four different QBs.

The rushing game was number one in the nations as Navy gained an average of 327.0 YPG on the ground. Their passing game was ranked 119th—last—in the country with the Midshipmen averaging only 56.0 YPG in the air. Reliable signal caller K-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (50% COMP, 384 YDs, 5 TDs, 1 INT) replaced injured QB Brian Hampton last October. Kaheaku-Enhada, a confident and smart leader, is back for the full season. The entire backfield returns, including leading rusher, senior FB Adam Ballard (154 CAR, 792 YDs, 3 TDs). The frontline has four of seven starters back, including center Antron Harper.

While the offense scored 28.2 PPG, the defense held opponents to 20.1 PPG. Navy managed to hold offenses to 116.7 YPG (38th nationally), while their secondary gave up 218.5 YPG (85th nationally). The "D" returns only two starters. ILB Clint Sovie (61 tackles, 43 solo, 2 INTs) is the only LB that returns and will need to be the primary anchor with the talented and athletic LBs David Mahoney and Tyler Tidwell gone. The secondary has corner Rashawn King, a junior, returning and will need to fill three holes, including the big one left by corner Keenan Little, who had stated 25 straight games. Three new linemen need to step-up.

Navy plays Rutgers, Wake Forest and Notre Dame—all of which will be tough to beat. Pittsburgh is a swing game. The Midshipmen should have a winning season and be bowl bound.

Just because a team doesn't reside in the SEC, Big East, Pac-Ten, Big Ten, Big 12, or ACC conference doesn't mean they can't play for the national title. Look for either Boise State or Hawaii having the best shot at playing in a BCS bowl game this January.
