Coach: Doug Martin (4th year at Kent State)
Team Name: Golden Flashes
2006 Overall Record: 6-6
Returning Starters: 16

Last season the Kent State Golden Flash (6- 6 overall, 5- 3 MAC) finished second in the East division. The club has not been to a bowl game since 1972 when it lost to Tampa 18- 21 in the Tangerine Bowl. With an improved rushing attack that was rated 39th nationally in 2006 and 117th in 2005 and plenty of returning talent on the frontline and at running back, Kent State could be a contender.

Junior Julian Edelman (55.4% COMP, 1,859 YDs, 10 TDs, 11 INTs) was a late JUNCO transfer who started as the third QB and became the starter when the season opened. He played well, although folks hope this season he can complete more passes and throw fewer INTs. One of the reasons the Golden Flashes running game improved so much was Edelman's ability to scamper. Last year, he gained 658 yards on the ground. The other reason the rushing attack prospered had to do with versatile RB Eugene Jarvis. Jarvis showed that he could run, gaining 798 YDs and making 3 TDs. Jarvis also caught 16 passes for 126 yards. Just about everyone returns to the frontline while the receiving corps have recruited some fine new talent to fill out the ranks.

The defense played well last season, holding opponents to 20.1 PPG. The secondary was especially tough. CB Jack William returns having snagged 4 interceptions. The front unit put pressure on QBs. Sophomore BLB Kevin Hogan returns as the sack leader with 7.5. The team will be without pass rush specialist All-American Daniel Muir. Coaches believe there's enough depth to make up for his loss.

Kent State has not had a winning season in the new century. Last year's 6 and 6 mark may portend of better things to come. Ohio is a swing game. If State wins that one, they could finish 8- 4! Pull an upset against either Iowa State, Kentucky, Ohio State or Central Michigan and the Golden Flashes will have a golden season. You never know.

Just because a team doesn't reside in the SEC, Big East, Pac-Ten, Big Ten, Big 12, or ACC conference doesn't mean they can't play for the national title. Look for either Boise State or Hawaii having the best shot at playing in a BCS bowl game this January.
