Coach: Chris Peterson (2nd year at Boise State)
Team Name: Broncos
2006 Overall Record: 13-0
Returning Starters: 11

The question for the Boise State Broncos (13- 0 overall, 8- 0 WAC), who have been to five straight bowls, is will they hold onto the WAC title? The Broncos, who beat Oklahoma 43- 42 in the Fiesta Bowl last year, face tough competition from Hawaii's powerful offense this year.

The offensive schemes of the Broncos are highly creative, leaving opponents off-balance. Junior tailback Ian Johnson (277 CAR, 1,713 YDs, 6.2 AVG, 25 TDs) is an offense-and-a half, helping to make the Broncos' scoring game second (39.7 PPG) in the nation and the rushing game sixth (214.2 YPG). In a four-way battle for starting QB, inexperienced junior Bush Hamdan stood out in spring practices. Senior back-up Taylor Tharp has taken limited amounts of snaps in games. The offensive line is filled with tough veterans and will offer important support to Hamdan. Two wide receivers return ready to break out—junior Vinny Perretta (17 REC, 124 YDs, 2 TDs) and sophomore Jeremy Childs.

The Broncos' defense was rated 8th versus the run and 45th versus the pass in 2006. The Broncos allowed opponents only 17.6 PPG. Senior safety Marty Tadman (53 tackles, 39 solo, 6 INTs) is an aggressive playmaker. Outside LBs Kyle Gingg and David Shields, both juniors, are solid athletes, while the Bronco defensive ends are fine pass rushers. Junior DE Mike T. Williams returns as the clubs' sack leader with four. The middle of the line is the weak part of this team and of concern.

With two swing games—one against Hawaii and the other Southern Miss—and a tough opponent in Washington, the Broncos will not have an easy road. Although the club has a strong running game, they'll be breaking in an inexperienced QB. This team will be vulnerable in early games against Southern Miss and Washington.
