Coach: Nick Saban (1st year at Alabama)
Team Name: Crimson Tide
2006 Overall Record: 6-7
Returning Starters: 14
The Alabama Crimson Tide (6- 7 overall, 2- 6 SEC) tied for 4th in the SEC West and lost to Oklahoma State 31- 34 in the Independence Bowl. Exit Mike Shula and enter Nick Saban (91- 42- 1 overall 11 years)—college's first $4 million head coach. There's also a new, young offensive coordinator-- Major Applewhite. Look for him to transform the Tide's attack.
The offense looks to be run-based with the intriguing option of a shotgun and four or five wide-outs. Junior quarterback John Parker Wilson (57% COMP, 2,707 YDs, 17 TDs, 10 INTs) has far exceeded expectations up to this point and is said to be very comfortable in the shotgun. His primary receivers will be seniors D.J. Hall (62 REC, 1,056 YDs, 17.0 AVG, 5 TDs) and Keith Brown (44 REC, 590 YDs, 13.4 YDs, 3 TDs); both of whom are gamers. Look for junior TE Travis McCall to be used more this year. The offensive line was weak last season. They've lost weight and gained strength during a rigorous winter training program. Backs Jimmy Johns and Terry Grant will be expected to run the ball more often.
This club, which held opponents to 19.2 PPG (ranked 31st nationally), had only 13 sacks all season—the fewest in the SEC. Saban will stimulate a more aggressive defense, attacking rather than waiting. Both defensive ends are strong and sophomore MLB Prince Hall is an on-field leader. In the secondary, senior Simeon Castille (6 INTs) knows how to read and react to developing plays. The safeties must do more than they did in 2006.
In the end, Alabama must score more than 22.9 PPG, placing them 68th nationally. Six wins are easy and 11 are possible. Swing games include Arkansas, Georgia, Florida State, Tennessee and Auburn. Beating LSU would be a monumental achievement.
