Atlanta Falcons Defense

Atlanta Has Concerns About Defense

The Atlanta Falcons were very impressive this past Sunday with a 20-6 win over division rival Carolina. The defense gave quarterback Jake Delhomme plenty of problems all day long. Much of Delhomme’s dismay came at the hands of defensive end, John Abraham. Abraham racked up two sacks, forced two fumbles, and five tackles in a monster performance against the Panthers. However, late in the game Abraham suffered a groin injury which may affect his status for this Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The status of the injury has not been revealed yet but Abraham did miss most of the 2003 season with the New York Jets for a similar injury.

To make matters worse, Atlanta’s other stud defensive end Patrick Kerney had to leave the game early with an injured right triceps. He did however play a little bit throughout the rest of the game. Test results revealed no tears so it looks like strengthening the muscle will be the key this week to getting Kerney back on the field. Bettors should be ware of the status of these two key players for the Falcons. The status of both players is day to day but should be watched carefully by anyone thinking about wagering on the contest between Atlanta and Tampa Bay this Sunday. Without your two starting defensive ends, your defense could be in for a long day.

The pair of defensive ends have a combined four Pro Bowl appearances between them and will be a major part of the success of this defense. John Abraham was brought in from the Jets to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks and to stop the run. His absence could allow Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms more time in the pocket as well as open up more holes for Cadillac Williams to run through. If both can’t go, Atlanta could be in trouble. The Bucs struggling offense will be looking to regain its form this week with a vengeance and their absence will only help their cause.
