Coach Mike Holmgren returns for his eighth season, having guided the Seahawks to the 2006 Super Bowl, where they lost to Pittsburgh 10-21. Repeat performance? Losers usually don’t make it back the next year, but that doesn’t mean Seattle won’t or can’t.

QB Matt Hasselbeck (449 ATT, 294 COMP, 3,459 YDS, 24 TDs, 9 INT) led the highest scoring offense in the NFL. Seattle was also first in Red Zone conversion (71.7%). Hasselbeck, a Pro Bowler, thinks well on his feet, moves easily and is a solid field general. He’s one of the NFL’s elite.

Running back Shaun Alexander (370 ATT, 1,880 YDS, 5.1 AVG, 27 TDs) is the best. A first down, touchdown machine, he can also catch the ball (15 REC, 78 YDS, 5.2 AVG, 1 TD). Last year’s total of 28 touchdowns was a new NFL record.

WR Darrel Jackson (38 REC, 482 YDS, 12.7 AVG, 3 TDs) and TE Jerramy Stevens (45 REC, 554 YDS, 12.3 AVG, 5 TDs) both return. Top-notch WR Joe Jurevicius was lost to free agency, prompting Seattle to sign Nate Burleson (Minnesota—30 REC, 328 YDS, 10.9 AVG, 1 TD). This group has depth.

The offensive line is also tops, featuring a mix of vets and some fine up-and-coming backups.

The defense sure improved in one year, going from being ranked 26th to 16th! They were 5th against the run and 7th in points allowed. The team led the NFL with 50 sacks. Bryce Fischer had 9, Rocky Bernard 8.5 and Leroy Hill 7.5.

The line performed much better than expected. The linebacking unit has added the versatile Julian Peterson (San Francisco), who can rush or drop back into coverage. Lofa Tatupu, a Pro Bowler last year as a rookie, will return, as will quick and agile sophomore Leroy Hill.

The secondary is the weakest aspect of this team. It’s overall young and inexperienced. If a QB has time, he might be able to beat them deep.

2006 Seattle Seahawks Predictions

Because the NFC West division is so weak, Seattle gets a relatively light schedule. Arizona will challenge them and non-division opponents Denver and Chicago could be tough, but when all is said and done they should be another repeat division champion this year.
