2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Preview

2006 ACC Football Predictions

The Atlantic and Coastal divisions of the ACC are primed to go. Some top teams, like Clemson and Virginia Tech, will have first time starting quarterbacks leading the way, while others, such as Florida State and Miami, feature signal callers with at least a year at the helm.

Florida States’ Drew Weatherford should be outstanding if he can cut down on interceptions and Miami’s Kyle Wright has the opportunity to finally reach his full potential in the leadership spot. Miami and Boston College both have leading quarterbacks returning.

This conference includes some of the best defenses in the country. Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech and B.C. are all tough units, making life extremely difficult for opponents.

In the Atlantic Division, Florida State and Clemson look first-rate and B.C. will be in the hunt for a title. Wake Forest, with running back Micah Andrews, may surprise a lot of experts with a stronger than expected finish.

Atlantic Division Predictions
1) Clemson
2) Boston College
3) Florida State
4) Wake Forest
5) Maryland
6) NC State

The Coastal Division has Virginia Tech at the top of the heap. Miami, if Kyle Wright can mature, and Georgia Tech, if top-rated receiver Calvin Johnson can get clear, should offer plenty of resistance and fight.

Coastal Division Predictions
1) Virginia Tech
2) Georgia Tech
3) Miami
4) Virginia
5) North Carolina
6) Duke

The edge between divisions goes to the Atlantic-6. Their offenses overall tend to be more dynamic and a majority of the top players are in that division. They also have the conference champs—Florida State.

The ACC should feature a Clemson/Virginia Tech final for the crown. Then again, with Boston College on the rise, Miami's unpredictability, FSU's excellent athletes, and Wake Forest as a potential spoiler, this is a tough conference to call.
