Coach: Bret Bielema (1st year at Wisconsin)
Team Name: Badgers
2005 Overall Record: 10-3
2005 Big 10 Conference Record 5-3
Returning Starters: 11
The Badgers feature a new coach, Bret Bielema, and a senior quarterback, John Stocco, who last season set school records for passing yards (2.920), touchdown passes (21) and completions (197). The scary thing for this team, which posted a 9-3 regular season record and beat Auburn in the Capital One Bowl, is that only two starters return on offense-- Stocco and left tackle Joe Thomas. Thomas is hoping to come back from a torn ACL.
The receivers, the line and the runners areall green. With a comeback, Thomas would have a major impact on bringing the line together. Tailbacks may be freshmen P.J. Hill and Dion Foster.
The defense has faired a bit better, with most of the secondary intact and a major part of the defensive line returning. Two players who could be instrumental, ends Jamal Cooper and Matt Shaughnessy, are both attempting to come back from ACL injuries. If they play, the front line will be strong, sturdy and deep.
The corners look good with Jack Ikegwuonu (3 interceptions) and Allen Langford returning. Safeties Roderick Rodgers (3 interceptions) and Joe Stellmacher offer good protection in the secondary.
Health is a major issue for this team. If the important cogs are all functioning, the Badgers could improve to 11 - 1. Games at Iowa and Purdue and against Penn State can go either way. Michigan will be tough for this team to beat.
