Coach: Jim Grobe (6th year at Wake Forest)
Team Name: Demon Deacons
2005 Overall Record: 4-7
2005 ACC Conference Record 3-5
Returning Starters: 19

The past few years have been tough on the Deacons, but they now have depth and still possess a strong running game. But will the lack of an aerial attack hurt their chances for a long overdue winning season?

Junior running back Micah Andrews (110 CARR, 482 YDS, 2 TDs), who replaces the record-setting Chris Barclay, did well in limited action last year. He’s got power and ability and should step up this season.

The Deacons offensive line is seasoned and ready to open the field for Andrews. Junior QB Ben Mauk, who was relieved of starting duties last season after going 1-3, will start again this year, despite a poor spring. The question is can he connect enough to keep opponents from focusing on Andrews? In four games last season, he threw 1 touchdown pass and 6 interceptions.

The Wake Forest defense has been less than stellar recently, however they have a talented group of returnees, especially at linebacker and in the secondary. Corner Alphonso Smith looks to have a breakout year and juniors Jeremy Thompson (10.5 tackles for a loss) and Matt Robinson are defensive anchors at the end spots. However, nose guard and tackle are both question marks.

The Deacons have a fairly easy season and may have enough to challenge B.C., Maryland and North Carolina. Bowl bound? It depends on Mauk more than anything.
