Coach: Jim Leavitt (10th year at South Florida)
Team Name: Bulls
2005 Overall Record: 6-6
2005 Big East Conference Record 4-3
Returning Starters: 13

Last season, the bulls possessed a good defense, keeping opponents to an average of 18.0 PPG. However, their lack of offense and resounding number of penalties hurt them greatly.

One thing is sure coach Jim Leavitt still hasn’t decided who will be calling signals for 2006. The choices are last year’s starter senior Pat Julmiste (124 COMP, 252 ATT, 1,489 YDS, 6 TDs), sophomore Carlton Hill or freshman Matt Grothe. Hill is a great prospect who can pass and run, but he had an uneven spring and is in academic trouble. Grothe is basically unknown. Julmiste just hasn’t performed well.

Another major part of the starting puzzle is Ricky Ponton (373 YDS, 2 TDs), a sophomore, who must replace Andre Hill (1,374 YDS, 13 TDs). That’s a lot of production to restore quickly. On the other hand, talented and versatile junior Amarri Jackson should be an asset at wide receiver.

The defense was great against the pass in 2005 and is very strong in that area again. On the line, the front four include 3 new starters, with junior nose tackle Richard Clebert anchoring the line.

If Hill is QB, this can be a much better offensive team and they’ll be in the conference mix. But there’s a lot to overcome, including a schedule that includes UCF, Rutgers, North Carolina and Pittsburgh. The first four games will say a lot about this team.
