Sure Miami scored an average of 27.1 PPG, but that was low for this team. Known for fielding explosive offenses, new coordinator Rich Olson is charged with scheming for more points.
Kyle Wright starts again at QB. He had a solid season (180 ATT, 307 ATT, 2,403 YDS, 18 TDs) in 2005. Tyrone Moss, tailback, ran for 701 yards and 12 TDs until a knee injury sidelined. He’s ready to go in 2006.
Wright has a lot of talent to throw to, but the receivers have to follow through. Talented TE Greg Olsen looks like he’s certainly ready to do just that. The untested offensive line must offer the QB more protection.
Miami had a stellar defense in 2005, ranked first in pass “D,” twenty-third at stopping the run, fourth in scoring (14.3 PPG) and fourth overall in defense. They had a turnover margin of plus 5.
The team is solid on the line with seniors Baraka Atkins and Bryan Pata at DE and the highly regarded Kareem Brown playing DT. Linebacking has been a disappointment, but in 2005 Jon Beason had a great year and he’s back to anchor the unit.
The corners offer questions, while the safety positions are stacked.
Florida State, Louisville and Virginia Tech will all be challenges. Miami opens against Florida State, if they win, it could mean 11 more wins for the Hurricanes.
