Coach: Ron Prince (1st year at Kansas State)
Team Name: Wildcats
2005 Overall Record: 5-6
2005 Big 12 Conference Record 2-6
Returning Starters: 17

New coach Ron Prince brings a West Coast Offense to Kansas State, which should spread things out. Who will start at quarterback—nobody knows, nor will they know until the fall. The Wildcats show depth at that position, with seniors Allen Webb and Dylan Meir, sophomore Allan Evridge and freshman Josh Freeman all in contention.

Running back Carlos Alsup is playing in a sixth year of eligibility and Thomas Clayton (137 carries, 637 yards, 4 TDs) returns as the team’s leading rusher. Junior Jordy Nelson, at wide receiver, led the team with 45 receptions and 8 TDs. The Wildcats, with Yamon Figurs and Jermaine Moreira, look very good at that position.

The offensive line will be solid if they can stay healthy. But there’s not a lot to back up the starters on that line.

Linebacker Brandon Archer, who has led the Cats in tackles the past two seasons, will be a force on the field. He’ll have to be a leader; he’s the only senior at linebacker who returns as a starter.

Marcus Watts, at free safety, may still be feeling the effects of an injury he sustained near the end of last season. This spring corner Justin McKinney was impressive.

The Wildcats notched 5 wins last season. Games at Baylor and Oklahoma State will determine if they can reach that mark again. This looks like a tough year for Kansas State.
