Can Clemson give Florida State a fight for the Atlantic Division title? The answer is yes.
But they need senior and first-time starting QB Will Proctor to use his athleticism and mobility to make things happen. Don’t look for Proctor to burn up the field with his passes. He’ll throw enough to keep the opposition honest. But Proctor will use his feet and the wheels of sophomore tailback of James Davis to score points.
Last season Davis, then a freshman, tallied 879 yards and 9 touchdowns on 165 carries. When Proctor does throw, it will often be in the direction of WR Chansi Stuckey (64 REC, 770 YDS, 4 TDs), a sure-handed playmaker.
The entire offensive front line, composed almost entirely of seniors, is back and should be fearsome.
Last year, the Tigers allowed only 17.6 PPG (ranked 11 nationally) and a total of 316.6 YPG (ranked 20). The linebacking, safeties and half of the front four all return. MLB Anthony Waters led the team with 109 tackles and front man Gaines Adams accumulated 9.5 sacks. Look for more of the same from both in 2006. The question marks are at the corners and depth at defensive end.
The four loses suffered by Clemson last season were all by 4
points or less. This improved team could go undefeated. Virginia
Tech and Florida State will be key contests that can determine
the division championship.
