Coach: Bobby Ross (3rd year at Army)
Team Name: Black Knights
2005 Overall Record: 4-7
Returning Starters: 16

The Black Knights, who had trouble scoring points, won four games last season. To win more, their junior quarterback David Pevoto (6 COMP, 12 ATT, 68 YDS, 0 TDs, 1 INT) will have to mature quickly and a true running back must emerge.

There are a lot of candidates for lead rusher, including senior Ricky Lay and sophomores Wesley McMahand, Jamal Robinson and Jerry Jones. If quarterback Pevoto can hit them, he’ll have no dearth of receivers, including senior Walter Hill (34 REC, 410 YDS, 2 TDs), junior Jeremy Trimble and senior Mike Castelli.

There is a whole lot of experience and depth on the offensive line, which should help the running game find its footing.

The defense made amazing strides last season, going from dead last in 2004 to thirty-seventh in 2005. Eight starters return, including junior strong safety Caleb Campbell (97 tackles, 5 INTS) and senior defensive end Cameron Craig (5 sacks). Both will prove to be invaluable again this year. The linebacking corps looks like a winner, while the corners will need some breaking-in time.

Six wins are not out of the question for the Black Knights, who will have to face two of their toughest opponents—Notre Dame and Navy—at the end of the season. Swing games against Arkansas State, Rice, Tulane and Air Force can turn the tide, giving this team it’s first 5-win season in a decade.
