Coach: Mike Shula (4th year at Alabama)
Team Name: Crimson Tide
2005 Overall Record: 9-2
2005 SEC Conference Record 6-2
Returning Starters: 13

The Tide needs a new quarterback and up to this point coach Mike Shula is unsure if it will be John Parker Wilson or Marc Guillon, neither of whom were outstanding in spring practices.

Much of the permeable front line is back, which hopefully means they’ll control the pass rush much better than they did in 2005 when they allowed 37 sacks. Running back Kenneth Darby, who has gained 1000-plus yards twice, is ready to gain another 1,000 or more this season. Fullbacks Le’Ron McClain and Tim Castille will make the ground game tough to stop.

The receivers look solid and whoever quarterbacks will have some quality guys to hit, although getting Tyrone Prothro, who is still doubtful, back from his leg injury would be extremely beneficial.

For two years in a row, ‘Bama has had the top defense in the country, allowing only 10.7 points, 94.3 yards rushing and 160.8 yards passing per game. If there’s going to be a change in that pattern, it will happen this year with the Crimson Tide fielding so many new players, especially in the secondary.

Alabama will certainly be in the hunt for a top bowl game this year but before that happens, they’ll have to weather a tough SEC schedule that includes key games against Arkansas and Tennessee. If they win those and also manage to beat either LSU or Auburn, the SEC will be seeing red.
